Martin Veselý finds beauty in places where we least expect it – in old metal, wood, plastic, concrete, asphalt, ice, and the like. A major inspiration in his artistic journey was his grandfather, Ctibor Veselý, who taught him to see the beauty in the details of various materials. He often said, “Look for beauty in ugliness.” The artist discovers art in places we pass by every day without noticing. At first, photographing these aged and weathered materials was simply a way to explore a broad palette of colors. Later, it evolved into a search for dreamlike landscapes, twisted trees, distant galaxies, mythical creatures, and human figures. The starting image is transformed by sunlight, rust, rain, or frost, and through the lens of the camera becomes an abstract work of art. A key aspect of this creative process is minimalism and a strong reliance on the artist’s individual and deeply subjective perspective.
The inspiration for the Other Worlds exhibition is the bottom of old metal barrels, which are transformed into exceptionally captivating images radiating the beauty of unknown planets in outer space.
Through Martin Veselý’s work, we come to realize that reality itself is a paradox. We look at something that exists or once existed independently of the observer. Yet at the same time, this very reality is shaped by the vision of a specific person – someone capable of seeing it through different eyes. In viewing these images, the artist invites the audience to open their imagination and dream, because everyone will see something different. These works capture fleeting moments not only through the medium of photography, but also through the fact that most of the original materials no longer exist or have significantly changed. This highlights transformation, motion, and evolution – elements that are philosophically essential to our understanding of reality. In the exhibited works, familiar materials are revived with new aesthetic significance, becoming autonomous works of art that expand human perception and invite us to see the world differently.
